Chakras 101 - A Guide to One’s Sacred Energy Centers

Many traditional cultures have long recognized the intricate system of energy centers in the human body known as Chakras. Chakra is the Sanskrit word for "wheel" or "circle." Hinduism, Taoism, and Buddhism are a few of these traditions that used these focal points in ancient meditation practices and traditional herbal medicine to support and nourish the chakras. These centers, often thought of as spinning disks of energy, have a need to maintain a state of being aligned and open. Each chakra is located in a different part of the body and has a corresponding system of energies, nerves, and major organs. They also each correlate to a specific color, natural element, as well as astrological and psychic energies. When one’s chakra energy flows naturally and freely, the body feels in harmony and at peace. When the chakras become out of balance, we may experience feelings of tension, stress, feeling out of sorts, blocked creative energy, difficulty understanding our feelings or those of others, to name a few. Healing herbs can be incredibly beneficial when used in traditional medicine to unblock or rebalance the chakras. Herbal medicinal plants can be very effective in helping to restore a feeling of balance within the body, bringing alignment and peace.

While the number of chakras in the body varies between some traditional cultures, it is widely agreed that there are 7 main chakras. They are:

Root chakra

Root Chakra

The Root Chakra is thought of as the foundation and sits at the base of the spine. It controls issues of survival, nourishment, and financial health, and when it is open, we experience feelings of being grounded, confident, and strong. It corresponds with the color red, and its element is earth. The Root Chakra is the first to develop, becoming established between the 2nd trimester to 12 months.

Feeling concerned or worried about one’s ability to withstand challenges or struggling to feel strong and balanced in one’s own body, are both signs of a blocked Root Chakra. Our Immune Warrior tincture works to strengthen the Root Chakra, activate the immune system, and also nourish the body, and increase stamina. Strong Roots is a tincture that is an incredibly effective everyday tonic as it leaves one feeling grounded and energized, ready to take on life’s challenges. Both of these tinctures are beneficial in clearing the Root Chakra and restoring balance to the foundation of one’s body.

Sacral chakra

Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra controls how we experience, relate to, and understand our own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. The Sacral Chakra also governs the realm of creativity and sexual energy. It is located in the lower abdomen, approximately 2 inches below the navel. It also controls one’s sense of well-being, pleasure, and abundance. Its correlating color is orange, and its element is water. The Sacral Chakra develops between 6 months to 2 years of age.

When one experiences a lack of control in their life, emotional instability, feeling overwhelmed or unimaginative, their Sacral Chakra may be blocked. Our Sex Magick tincture contains Damiana, which is a potent ancient aphrodisiac and a traditional herbal remedy for a blocked Sacral Chakra.

Solar Plexus

Solar Plexus Chakra

The Solar Plexus Chakra deals with our feelings of confidence, self-worth, and self-esteem. It is located in the upper abdomen area, near the stomach. When we experience feelings such as butterflies or a pit in our stomach, that is our Solar Plexus Chakra at work. Its corresponding color is yellow and it relates to the element of fire. It usually develops between 18 months to 4 years of age.

A blocked Solar Plexus Chakra could lead to overwhelming feelings of self-doubt or shame, and difficulty expressing one’s true self. Our Venus Glow tincture helps to clear a blocked Solar Plexus Chakra and encourages one to honor and nourish their unique beauty, inside and out.

Heart chakra

Heart Chakra

The Heart Chakra bridges the upper and lower chakras in the body and is the domain of inner peace, joy, and love. It can be influential on one's ability to give and receive love. The Heart Chakra is located in the center of the chest just above the heart. Its correlating color is green and its element is air. The Heart Chakra develops between age 4 to 7 years.

A blocked Heart Chakra can result in difficulties being open with loved ones, and experiencing and embracing deep feelings of compassion and empathy. Our Sacred Heart tincture can be used to clear a blocked Heart Chakra and help the heart to find a balance between a state of openness and a guarded state. Our Spirit Rising tincture can also be used to clear the Heart Chakra and promote a feeling of an uplifted and intuitively guided heart.

Throat chakra

Throat Chakra

The Throat Chakra is known as the voice of the Heart Chakra and controls the ability to communicate. It also holds our personal power and empowers us to express ourselves in a clear and genuine way. The Throat Chakra helps one to live and speak their truth. Its corresponding color is blue, and its element is music/sound. The Throat Chakra develops between ages 7 and 12.

When the Throat Chakra becomes blocked, one may have trouble finding your words or expressing oneself well. One may also have difficulty asking for help or articulating what they need from others. Our Incantation tincture works to open the Throat Chakra and encourages one to feel empowered and inspired to manifest their vision.

Third eye

Third Eye Chakra

The Third Eye Chakra allows us to see the big picture and supports our intuition. It is considered the eye of the soul and promotes and supports wisdom, imagination, and intuition. The Third Eye Chakra is located on the forehead, between the eyes. Its corresponding color is dark blue or violet, and its related element is light. It is common for those with an open third eye chakra, to experience visions or strong intuitive feelings. The Third Heart Chakra becomes developed in adolescence.

If one’s Third Eye Chakra becomes blocked, one may experience feelings of distrust towards one’s inner voice and feel lost or directionless. One may also experience feelings of fear related to past trauma or uncertainties about the future. Our High Priestess tincture helps one tune into the vibration of the third eye and opens one up to divine guidance and strengthened psychic abilities.

Crown chakra

Crown Chakra

The Crown Chakra is the highest chakra and controls such things as spirituality, connection, and access to a higher or elevated consciousness. It is located at the very top, or crown, of the head. It is known as the “bridge to the cosmos” and acts as a center of enlightenment, wisdom, and spirit. Its related color is white and its corresponding element is divine consciousness. The Crown Chakra's developmental stage is early adulthood and after.

A blocked Crown Chakra may result in feelings of being detached from the world, uninspired, or closed to other ideas or thoughts. One may also feel lonely, isolated, or unmotivated. Our Dark Moon tincture is a soothing herbal elixir that works to balance the Crown Chakra and promote deep rest and nourishing, dreamless sleep that restores the body and calms the mind. Focus Pocus brings circulation to the brain and helps to elevate one's thoughts. It brings one into a state of focus and helps to clear the mind and clarify a vision.

The chakras have been part of traditional medicine for centuries. Herbalists all over the world have used sacred plant medicine as natural healing remedies that work to balance and clear the chakras. These sacred plants help to harness positive energy, let go of what ails or weighs one down and achieve a higher level of existence. When these magical healing herbs are used effectively and appropriately to clear and balance the chakras, they can help one to maintain a balanced state of spirit, mind, and body.
